Building Strong Foundations: Developing Gross Motor Skills with Our Infants

At Rising Stars Learning Center, we believe that learning begins from the earliest stages of life. That’s why, from as early as 6 weeks old, we begin working with our infants to help them hit critical developmental milestones—starting with gross motor skills.

Gross motor skills are the abilities that involve large muscle movements, such as sitting, crawling, and walking. These skills form the foundation for a child’s physical development, and they’re essential for later abilities like coordination, balance, and overall mobility. At our center, we incorporate these skills into daily activities, ensuring that our infants not only meet but exceed the important milestones as they grow.

One of our favorite activities for developing gross motor skills is our crawling tunnel exercise. Infants love exploring this new environment, and it does so much more than just provide entertainment. Crawling through the tunnel strengthens their arms, legs, and core muscles, while also enhancing their coordination and spatial awareness. As they move through the tunnel, they learn about the relationship between their bodies and the space around them, which is an important concept that helps with both physical and cognitive development.

But the teaching starts well before they’re ready to crawl. As early as 6 weeks, we work on helping babies develop their neck and head control through tummy time, which is crucial for preparing them to crawl and sit up. We also engage them in gentle exercises that encourage kicking and reaching, helping to strengthen their muscles and improve their ability to focus on and track objects. These small but important movements are the building blocks for more advanced gross motor skills as they grow.

At Rising Stars Learning Center, we understand that every infant develops at their own pace. That’s why we offer a variety of activities tailored to each child's developmental stage, ensuring they have the support and encouragement they need to reach their full potential. Our team is trained to recognize the key milestones in an infant’s gross motor development and to create a nurturing environment that fosters growth and movement.

We take pride in knowing that the work we do with our infants lays the foundation for their future success—not only in physical abilities but also in building confidence and independence. Each time an infant crawls through the tunnel or lifts their head during tummy time, they’re learning, growing, and moving forward toward their next big milestone.

Gross motor skill development is a vital part of early childhood, and at Rising Stars Learning Center, we are committed to helping every child in our care get off to the best possible start. We can't wait to see them continue to grow, thrive, and reach new heights!
